One day, right smack in the middle of the polar bear migration season
(late Fall), a bunch of visiting medical students, one of whom had a bum
leg and was on crutches, went south of town to take photos of the polar
bears. They managed to find a large momma bear sleeping amidst
some rocks (the bears like that... more heat!). Thinking that a sleeping
bear wasn't all that photogenic, one of them actually started throwing
rocks at the bear to try and get its attention!
Hmmmm . . . could have gotten some practical application of all their
medical training. Polar bears are _not_ as small as their opposite colored
cousins farther south.
At Fort Riley, Kansas we had a fenced game preserve set aside for a herd of
buffalo. These _are_ wild animals, and they're substantially bigger than
domestic cattle. They apparently look enough like cattle that Army
personnel had to occasionally rescue someone who climbed over the fence to
pet them. The bulls did not take kindly to anyone around the herd of cows
(females) and would quickly become very aggressive, not to mention the cows
which were would become just as aggressive if there were any young calves
around.
