what is wasabi?
Japanese "horseradish" (not really, but used in much the same
way). Sinus-clearing and tasty (Wasabi Peas are one of my favourite snack
foods!). Green in colour, can be bought as a paste or in a powder form to
which you add water or rice wine to reconstitute. Used a lot with sushi
(you can notice it as a greenish tinge on maki, ferinstance...).
As pointed out in the URL Jim Timpe gave you, there's genuine Wasabi and
fake Wasabi, and they *do* taste different. Genuine Wasabi's also more
expensive than the fake variety; fortunately, we have a couple of good
Japanese grocery stores here in Edmonton where you can buy the real thing,
if you're so inclined.
