I like the Bogan (Manfrotto?) 3021 as it has a solid
and tall base, shortenable center post and can come
with an excellent 3-way head. Only problem I've come
across in stability is a slight tendency to start
humming in a strong wind. I experienced this problem
again just the other day. Strange! Regardless, it is
a heavy (10 pound)tripod that is good for very tall
people, yet can get you down to near ground level.
The Bogans are lifetime investments--very good
quality.
Another option is to go for a video tripod with a
video head for the 500mm lenses. Best for panning
shots and more than stable. Of course the video
tripod will cost a whole lot more, but there won't be
any backlash movement.
