Sounds like a severe case of sticky magnet -- at least you should hope
so! That's not too difficult to correct, and doesn't require parts.
Try this test - leave the camera wound overnight, remove the lens and
film, and fire the shutter in Auto or Program mode. The shutter should
fire very quickly. If not, if there's a delay or the shutter stays
open, it's got a sticky magnet. Next test, remove the batteries and
fire the shutter so that the mirror locks up. Then leave locked up
overnight. The next day, replace the batteries -- the mirror should
return almost immediately. If not, the magnet that releases the mirror
mechanism is probably sticky, too -- much more difficult to correct, but
still repairable w/o parts.
