I always ask standard questions of items I want to buy.
1. Are there any cosmetic or mechanical problems with the ___?
If they don't respond, or are vague or evasive, then you are on guard. If you
think they are hapless and don't know what they are doing, you might bid
anyway (or make a lower bid to hedge your bets).
This question should cover broken mirrors, missing parts, etc. even if the
equipment is advertised "as is." The term "as is" is meaningless if there is
no description of the item but the buyer bears the risk of the
meaninglessness.
