John R,
I actually think that the 50mm is a lens that you can't really
outgrow, because it's the closest to the view you get from your eye,
unless you outgrow that (your eye) a 50mm is invaluable.
That being said, I would like to take the camera on rock climbs, Mt.
biking, and vacations. That's why I looked for a small rugged
compact SLR system. I mean if I didn't want it to be portable, then
I would have bought a N*kon.
That being said, I wish Zuiko made a 35-200mm zoom that is compact.
I have no idea the quality of Tamron, but they make a 28-200 and a 28-
300, that is very compact. For a vacation, I would probably want to
take just 2 lenses, more than likely the 50mm on the camera itself,
and a small compact zoom on the belt, that's it.
Zuiko (unfortunately) does not make such a lens, at least not one
that I know of..
I would like to have a macro lens as well, say a 90mm macro.. That's
about it. I like simplicity, and that's why I really liked the OM
series...
My camera was sent 2 days ago via the US postal service, priority
mail. That means I'm sure it's lost somewhere. If I get it today,
I'll 1) Be shocked 2) Let you guys know so you can all join with
me in celebration.
While Olympus might move slowly into only two lines, P&S, and
Digital, I think Digital SLR is in there, and I think a screw mount
conversion so the newer "digital lenses" can be made to be OM
compatible. If they do that, then they are just brilliant, and since
C*non and N*kon have both done it with some success, I think it's
highly likely to occur.
As for filters, well, the debate never ends... Do I put a filter on
as a "cheap functional lens cap" that is never removed so I can save
my glass, or does the additional "air gap" of the filter ruin the
concept of having good glass anyway? Does putting a filter in front
of my Zuiko's put me in no better position than having 3rd party
glass on there? I guess these are the debates that continue...
As for cameras, I see them paralleling cars (I love cars too!!)
Zeiss = Mercedes (A standard that most are judged against)
Leica = BMW (Self-proclaimed Ultimate "Photography" Machine)
C*non = Honda (Everybody on every block has one)
N*kon = Toyota (Everybody on every block who doesn't own a C*non ones
one of these)
So what does Olympus = ? I own an Audi A4 1.8Turbo Quattro. (I love
my car!!!) and I bought it because it was of the same build quality
as the MB's and BMW's, and it was not a Honda or Toyota, and I
thought it small, cute, compact, highly functional, had better
features than others, and was by far the best bang for the buck out
of the crowd, just like I feel the OM system is after serious
research...
I'm sure I'll hear some disagreements...
Albert
