What is a "decent" filter to get? Can someone name me a few brands?
I'm clueless...
1. B+W. Great German filters. Mostly uncoated, but desirable for their
wide range of colour-correction filters as well as dead-flat Schott optical
glass. Expensive. I own several, and I'm quite happy with them (mostly
for black 'n white work).
2. Tiffen. Again, mostly uncoated filters. Good range of special effects
filters -- I use several of the "Softnet" series for portraits and
imparting general 'atmosphere' to various photos. Lack of coating doesn't
really matter here anyways -- you use these filters to *degrade* your
images in very selected ways (softening and contrast-reducing, ferinstance).
3. Hoya. Basic filters, such as the Skylight 1B, are available in
super-multi-coated versions (more expensive, but minimizes any additional
flare/ghosting from the additional glass surfaces). I use Hoya Skylight 1B
SMC filters on all my lenses. Hoya also produces some super-thin types for
your massively wide-angled lenses (helps to reduce or eliminate vignetting
from the filter rings).
Those are my faves. I'm sure other people will weigh in with their own.
