Sounds similar to problems my mom's iS-2 had when it hadn't been used for a
while. After installing fresh batteries and playing with all the buttons
for a while it came back to life and has worked fine since. It doesn't need
film loaded to work.
Check those batteries contacts - make sure they're plenty springy and clean.
An ink eraser is perfect for brightening contacts but a pencil eraser will
do in a pinch.
