So far Ian's suggestion for a spot-welded metal-disc-and-spring-metal-strip
assembly sounds the simplest. I'd suggest a riveted assembly would be even
simpler. Drill the hole, pop the rivet, done. Me, I'm a lousy welder.
Might even be possible to make the entire thing from a single piece of metal
disk stock using a Dremel or similar moto-tool to form the necessary flanges
and coin slot. An older copper penny might be suitable - the post-1980
pennies are copper coated zinc and may not be flexible enough, I dunno.
OTOH, the zinc would more closely match the original MD cap.

I agree that an all-metal solution would be preferable though. Why not do
that in two parts? - a disc bit and a bent metal strip, spot-welded
together.
