Dear David,
All roll call means: you check off a list to see who is present at a
meeting/function or who is not present.
For example:
" Ladies and gentleman in the room, please state your name and where you are
from, we are taking a roll call to see who is present...before the meeting
begins...
Normally in a roll call, you read a name from a list and a respondent
responds the words "here" or "present", usually from a name list as it's
being read, unless you have a remarkable memory like Napoleon.
I heard the term " roll call" was officially adopted in the act of war.
After a battle, names were called out to see who survived a battle. It was
later adopted in meetings to establish a quorum, etc....whether this is
true, I don't know....
Sam...
