>As for me, I bought the Polaroid for one reason: resolution.
For me DMax is more important. I was able to get very acceptable 13x19 prints
with 2700 ppi from a Nikon LS-20 simply by upsampling in Photoshop. With a
couple images one would be very hard-pressed to tell the difference between
this much older Nikon scanner and the mighty SS4000.
But shadow detail was horrible with the LS-20. I'm absolutely sure that the
LS-30 (not to mention LS-2000) is much much better, but I based my purchase
mainly on the Polaroid's reputation for pulling the last measure of data from
the shadows. It does this very well.
OK, the additional resolution is certainly a plus. But very often when I
don't need the capability to go to large print sizes, I scan at 2000 ppi. Even
at low rez I still get the full benefits of that shadow penetration. I don't
ever *not* need it, though I don't always need all the pixels. :-)
