Agreed about the memory (I have 512 Megs in my machine), but you can ameliorate
the problem by immediately converting the image from a TIFF into a high-quality
(Level 12 in Photoshop) JPEG. Lose some information? Yeah, but the image from
most scanners is so big to begin with that it doesn't normally matter.
