Just two suggestions:
1. Use it more (that's actually better then using it less - occasional
operation keeps the switches from oxidizing), and
2. if it quits working properly, get it fixed - no sooner. IOW, if it
ain't broke - you know the rest!
OK, three suggestions:
3. Keep your equipment clean - gently brush away any
dust/dirt/sand/debris with an old, clean, dry (!) toothbrush.
