Depends (somewhat) on which lens - what do you have?
On most Oly lenses, the focusing ring is held in place with 3 set
screws, underneath the grip. If these are loose, they will eventually
allow the ring to slip and you might end up separating the helicoid -
bad news, if you don't know how to reassemble. Better to tighten them
before it gets to be a problem.
A few Oly lenses don't tighten that way, but they're rare. And some
develop "wobble" in the helicoid (the guides and/or tracks wear out or
the threads themselves get worn and "sloppy") from use.
