This topic brings out the former OSHA safety inspector in me. Please, if
you must try a flammable solvent - lighter fluid is the least dangerous
commonly available solvent. Note that I didn't say *safe* - merely least
dangerous.
Unlike acetone, methanol and many other solvents, the vapor pressure and
ignition point of Ronson lighter fluid is such that you needn't worry about
a few drops on a cotton swab spreading downward and outward across the floor
to be unexpectedly ignited by any of the dozens of ignition sources in our
homes.
There's also a solvent designed for removing labels that works pretty well.
It's a mixture of solvents and, frankly, I wouldn't pour the stuff on as the
manufacturer recommends. Rather, I dab it on a little at a time with a
cotton swab, using a table knife or something similar to lift up the edges
as I go.
Also, you may find that a non-flammable solvent may work reasonably well.
There are citrus-based cleaners that do a surprisingly good job. I have
several types at home, and Gary Edwards showed me yet another type recently
that does a nice job of de-gooing camera parts.
Sorry for the lecture. Saw too many horrible accidents during my time with
OSHA. Please be safe.
