We should all go out and buy disposable cameras, in that way we would not
have to bother worrying about any settings or choices.
We could really concentrate on the essence of photography!
Maybe we should convert to a Lomography list.
Seriously I tend to agree with you that often gear gets in the way of
concentrating on what are probably the most important aspects of photography.
Since I hike and climb with my gear a lot (which is mainly why I started
using compact Oly gear) I almost always land up with at most a couple of
favourite lenses. The recent discussions on wedding photography illustrate
this rather well with pro wedding photography Ken N. arguing for simplicity.
I have the same feeling with zooms that often when I use them, I miss
photographs because I am more concerned with framing rather than catching the
interesting moment. If I don't have a zoom I start out looking around for the
best vantage point and then concentrate on catching the interesting moment.
If you like to do specialised photography (Wildlife, micro, surfing, copy work
etc ) the specialised lenses, flashes etc become much more important. I think
one of the nice aspects of photography is it's dual nature. The technocratic
versus artistic. In a list like this dedicated to OM gear there is probably
too much emphasis on gear, technique and failing gear diagnosis, but the
artisitc side is also catered for. People post their website photo url's,
ADITL events, OM poetry (!) etc. and members like yourself and Doris post
more mystical comments.

Perhaps I'm on the wrong mailing list...?

Not at all , it would be so tedious if we *only* discussed gear.
Apart from over the top political flame wars even the completely OT non photo
discussions add some color and humour.
