Mike,

Sounds like a dragging shutter.  I had a PC that did the same thing,
only at the high shutter speeds.  Try a few frames at 1/500 and 1/1000;
then close down the lens and try 1/250, 1/125, etc.  Also, if the PC/40
has the "secret" 1/2000 speed, it might only show up then.
