I usually have some kind of filter on the front of my lenses, because:

I was out in the hills the other day, up Glen Quoich (koo-ich), when I
dropped my OM2n with 35/2 attached. The lens faceplanted in the gritty mud.
Fortunately, no damage to the lens. Even more fortunately, no damage to the
filter. That was only because I resisted the first urge, to wipe the gritty
mud off... and washed it off first.

Maybe I'll keep doing the filter thing. YMMV.
