There is a pro photog called McCurry who was interviewed for the
latest Amateur Photography; his experience with Heathrow has not been
good. He claims that the security people take a "sadistic" pleasure
in putting his films through the scanners.
Now, there may be a certain amount of exaggeration here (he being an
artist and from the US ;-)), but it does not look good in PR terms
for Heathrow. I am perfectly happy with the high level of security
at Heathrow, and but there is scope for flexibility surely?
BTW I avoid travelling by Heathrow if I can. It is big and very very
busy. Now Amsterdam Schipol seems to be even bigger, but it has
lovely electronics and camera shops ... even if no second-hand OM
stuff.

I think, given a fixed power level for the XRay, there would be a very
slight degree of extra protection offered by an all metal body.

Are our metal-bodied SLRs less likely to be affected (the film inside I

X-Ray technology.
The issue here is "fixed power level for the X-Ray." Most airport
X-ray machines now come with the ability to "up the power" so as to
see through things that are otherwise opaque at lower power levels.
Which means they'll keep upping the power until they can see through
the camera.
At Heathrow, such a beast was used on my OM-4 with film in it.
Didn't notice any problems once I had the film processed, though.
