Your Lead Acid Dcells are probably "Hawker-Sidley" (nee Gates) batteries.
Very few vendors make cylindrical cells Hawker's smallest cells are
approximately D size (the tabs are different) . There is another vendor that
makes cylindrical cells very similar to Hawker but in a smaller size
approximating a C-cell. They are based in Colorado the name is something like
Colorado battery systems. They are a Gates/Hawker spinoff. Everybody else
makes prismatic (flat) batteries or in some low cost consumer gear chewing
gum pack ,shaped cells with very poor performance.
