Actually, this person contacted the seller early and arrived at some sort of
deal prior to auction close. I know because I had this one flagged and was
watching it (with mild interest, but no earnest desire to acquire this
lens). It ended about a day and a half early.

I'm with Mark on this one Tom (it was James, not Mark who offered the
items for sale btw). I believe that it's important that we believe
that the seller is making available one of his collection
(implication: owned for a while), unless he or she says that he got
lucky on eBay but that he is willing to part with the little gem for
the right price - that's clear and completely fair in my opinion.
