The OM-2/2n need(s) power to energize the shutter's electromagnet, else
the armature pulls away upon release and the shutter "locks up" - the
mirror goes up, but nothing else happens until you set mechanically
release the mirror using the "B" on the shutter dial or (on the 2n), the
Battery Check/Reset position on the mode switch. This is so that, if
the batteries are dead or the camera is malfunctioning, you won't keep
shooting away with a camera that won't take pictures.
The OM-1/1n (having an entirely mechanical shutter mechanism) doesn't
need batteries to control the shutter speed, so it will fire a flash
anytime it's attached.
The OM-4/4T will also "lock up" and release on "B" (just like the
OM-2/2n), but it was also designed with a special mechanism to provide a
mechanical speed of 1/60th second so that the camera can still be used
even if the batteries are weak, dead or missing. But beware - the
OM-4/4T use(s) the camera's battery to fire a flash. Without batteries,
there's no power to trigger the SCR that controls the flash sync.
