My guess is the tulip shape provides the maximum protection from flare
without causing corner vignetting. I suppose the ideal shape would be a
rectangle matching the proportions of the 24x36 frame, but I've never seen
such a hood.

...the 35-80/2.8 has one of those funky tulip-shaped hoods.
Now, can anyone tell me what (other than making the lens look extra
cool and professional ;)) the reason is that the really expensive
pro-zooms all seem to have such a lens hood?
