As a very new member of this list maybe I shouldn't be sticking my
$0.02 worth in here. However, I'll do it anyway.
I'm on many (20+) mailing lists, and this subject repeatedly comes up.
#1 Changing the "reply to:" field severely restricts the usefulness of
the list as threads become impossible to follow. In some instances a
direct reply to the sender is very appropriate (flames, negotiating
the price of a sale, making a date, etc.) and then it's very simple
for the sender to cut and paste the recipient's address.
#2 Many people enjoy following Off Topic threads, while many don't.
The most workable solution is to use the [OT] tag in the subject
line. If a person dislikes [OT] posts, then the delete key is very
easy to press. If a mail program that automatically sorts the mail
is used, then all messages with [OT] material can automatically be
sent to the trash folder and all that is needed is the occasional
emptying of the trash. If the list has a large amount of [OT] posts,
then it's very workable for the list administrator to designate other
[xx] tags ... [NK] for Nikon ... [NZ] or [OZ] for down under politics,
etc.
IMHO the main thing is to be friendly, polite, informative, and most
of all, to have fun!
Have fun (and quit 'chr bitchin),
