The best "solution" - albeit a cobbled together one - I've found for us
Wintel users is a video board with software adjustable gamma, brightness,
contrast, color correction, etc. With some finessing it's possible to set a
monitor so that an image prepped in Photo-Paint, Photoshop, Paintshop, etc.,
will look the same in an uncorrected image viewer or web browser.
Many of you PC users may already have such a board and not realize that an
updated driver exists to let you finesse your settings. Check the
manufacturer's website for freebies.
I've settled on sRGB and a compromise between the Mac and PC gamma settings
so either looks reasonably good onscreen. I use the monitor's so-called
"brightness" and "contrast" controlled only to temporarily reset things to
appreciate a particular image. For whatever reason I've seldom found it
necessary to change anything to enjoy images uploaded by OM listfolk, while
I frequently must do so to view other photos online.
