Not sure if anyone else in this neck of the woods (Garth???) got there,
but I wandered through the Annual Edmonton Photo Fair yesterday....
my first time there, btw.
I was surprised at the number of people who wandered through with me,
but was a little disappointed in the amount of gear there. It wasn't really
all *that* big and (of course!) was dominated by Nikon, Canon and
(yech!) even Minolta gunk. Most of it was 35mm, but there were a few
medium (Hassy, Bronica and Pentax) and large format (not sure what
brands... mostly very old, tho) items on display... just 'nuff to get me
drooling and dreaming in technicolor again. (Sigh!) :-)
As for Olympus stuff, there were a few bodies available... a couple of
OM-1's, nadda for 2/3/4 bodies, a couple of OM-10's, and OM-G and an
IS-1. Any OM mount lenses I found (except for a lonely 50/1.8) were
from third parties, so being a Zuiko "purist" I won't even mention them.
Prices varied from "not-too-bad" up to the "yeah, right!" range, but
having no money I didn't get into any dickering. I didn't even argue with
the guy with the IS-1 when he tried to tell me that it's a better camera
than the IS-3! (See, gang, I'm NOT really an argumentative kinda guy!)
<G>
My favorite local used store had a booth, but didn't bring any Oly stuff
with them. When I mentioned that fact to them, I was told, "But we're
saving it all for YOU, Chris!" Had to smile at that one and leave it at
that! <G>
So, anyway, my overall impression was that it was kinda "so-so" but
still worth the CDN$2 admission and not-a-bad-way to kill an hour or so
on a Sunday morning.
Afterwards, we wandered over to Fort Edmonton (a local historical site),
and I chewed through 3 rolls of (Kirkland/Agfa 200) film. Fall is in full
assault here, so I hopefully got some nice fall-color shots. But, what I
really wanted to mention is that I'm ECSTATIC with my decision to go
ahead and get the Zuiko 24/2.8 lens! I took a number of shots of some
of the rooms in the fort, and the 24/2.8 came in REAL handy for that.
Also got a couple of nose-to-nose shots of some ducks that wanted to
"explore" the front of the lens, my camera bag, and anything else they
could poke at with their bills. It'll be interesting to see how the 24/2.8
distorts those shots!
Thanks, once again, to all of you who recommended the 24/2.8 as one
interesting-to-use and fun lens!!!
Anyway, I had a very pleasant, safe, and unarmed (except for camera
gear!) Sunday. Hope everyone else did too!
Regards,
Chris
