A local gallery features photos taken by a fellow who spends his spare time
as a postman. Excellent, glowing color landscapes, using 35mm gear
(Can-not-an-OM-on, I think). Matted, framed 8x10s for an average of $400,
and the gallery owner says they sell rather well. I can see why.
Good framing and matting (done by a shop) averages $100. The most I've
spent for framing/matting was around $250 for one of my ex-wife's pieces
(she does montages using paper and other materials). Factor in gallery
commission and costs for reproduction - the artist/photographer ain't making
much. Ctein's fine art prints using the dye transfer process sell for
around $1,000 and since he does his own printing and framing he's among the
relative handful making a living solely from photography (and writing
technical articles about photography and darkroom work for various
journals).
This addiction is darned expensive!
