I think another question is price. A 24x36mm CCD Sensor will be pretty
expensive.
In Chip production the wafers are the one of the most price
relevant factors. Chip-prices are getting ceaper when the elements are
shrinked so they can get more Chips from a wafer.
That`s why manufaturers prefer smaller sensors with a higher pixel density.
