Somewhere around here I have a link to a site set up by a professor in 
Rochester (RIT?) who's developed CCD cameras made from cannibalized 
scanners, like those handheld scanners nobody uses anymore.  He also has 
some interesting theories about perception that I can't begin to make sense 
of.
