Doh! I dunno. Magnetic barcodes mebbe? I dint think ta axe.
But they definitely pop the film out of the cassette in a changing bag
before processing, so the markings on the cassette don't have anything to do
with it. This was at Eckerd. Maybe other labs do it differently.

but hjow can it read ANYthing if the film is undeveloped? the only reason
you/I can see the marking on the film edges is that they are developed.
