This is one area where the Slik U-212 Deluxe is truly versatile - as a macro
'pod. Mount the head on the leg that's already fitted with a mounting bolt;
remove the center column; extend the leg angles as far as they'll go, or to
one's preferences; fire away. Since the leg sections aren't extended for
this use they don't wobble (Slik's fancy-schmancy square section tubing
really ain't a great solution).
I know what ya mean about the Bogen 3001 as a macro 'pod. Just doesn't work
well for that. Their relatively newer model that's a variation of the 3011
or 3021 - I think it's the 3028 - might be better. It allows mounting the
center post parallel with the ground.
Like you I'll go for the cheap solution - a styrofoam plate cut out for the
lens. Makes a great combination reflector/diffuser. I also like beanbags
for flexibility. They work well enough to help put projectiles into little
bitty groups at 100-500 yards. No reason they won't work for stabilizing a
camera.

Man, you got that right. I've tried that repeatedly with both a Bogen 3001
and a Tiltall 'pro' and really I can't see how people even think it's an
acceptable solution. My current solution is to also have a small Ultrapod
II and a couple of bean bags with me so that I can get low without having
to be contorted or upside down, etc.
Thanks again to all,
