Here's a quote from Frank Moster that I liked:
"The criteria for a good tripod are: 1) It must come to your eye level with the
head and
camera mounted and with no centerpost extension.
If you have to use the centerpost you no longer have a tripod but rather a
monopod.
And if it's too short you'll have to stoop over to
look through the viewfinder and end up with a sore back. 2) The legs
must have the ability to
splay out. This allows you to work close to the ground with flowers
and in awkward
situations when the ground is not level. 3) It must allow the
photographer to put whatever
head they want on it. 4) It hould have three sections per leg. If it
has four the smallest leg is
about the same diameter as a pencil and about as stable.
The only two brands of tripod that meet these criteria are Bogen,
and Gitzo. I am going to
recommend the bare minimum tripod based on photographer height.
Prices quoted are
average mail order. If you are over 5'6" you should use the Bogen
3021 ($100) or the Gitzo
224 ($250)."
