It's been a few years since I sold my Pen F and FT cameras but I remember
taking the covers off one of them (maybe the F)and I think I did it without
the complications you describe. I feel sure that I unscrewed the self timer
button by friction and then wobbled the lever until it came off, after which
the top cover lifted free.

If no more information is forthcoming, perhaps a technician at Olympus
Germany (Hamburg?) can assist. They have a particularly good reputation for
service.
