Perhaps there are Viviphiles with more specific info than I have, but Series
1 lenses generally fall into three groups: those made in the 1970s, '80s and
'90s. Some folks seem to prefer the robust construction of the first two
generations but apart from that I don't know how much actual optical
difference separates them.
I know that one difference between the earlier and later versions is the use
of varifocal vs. true zoom design. Early on Vivitar and others realized it
was more cost effective to make a varifocal with good optics, something AF
lens designers/makers are repeating. But a certain stigma attached itself
to varifocals and the market demand for true zooms led to other designs.
You might find a bit more info by ferreting around this excellent site:

Just wondering whether anyone has any info on the difference between the
28 - 105mm S1 lens. I was looking at one of these lenses. The vivitar
website has different specs than the one I was looking at.
