There is no photographic "hi end" in the same
sense as used in audio. There is no mysticism and arcane theories in
photography. There's no one selling stuff that is totally off the wall, made
from various exotic materials, and backed up by whitepapers! There are no
magazines dedicated to hi end photogrpahy, with long, semi-erotic poeticisms
about the latest and greatest gear. There are no obscure tiny manufacturers
in small villages making photo gear by hand.
Sorry Dirk, this is completely false. You obviously haven't
discovered the world of large format and, especially, ultraformat
photography. Hand-crafted, exotic wood cameras, rare lenses more
desirable than Leicas, contact prints onto handmade papers with hand
laid emulsions using ancient formulas, tiny magazines preaching to
the choir. Digital is so far from entering this field (unlike 35mm
and medium format) that it isn't even discussed. It's all there when
you're ready for the ultimate in photography.
