Ken,
I have a Canon Elura Mini-DV camcorder. I also have a SIIG PCMCIA Firewire
card for my laptop, and my desktop has built in Firewire. The whole
think, new, is around $1300. The SIIG comes with decent editing software.
The nice thing about this setup is that it entirely digital. You can edit
it in your PC, including quite a bit of digital manipulation, wipes, titles,
etc. Then you can record your edited video back to a fresh tape in the
camera, as an original.
My guess is that most cable outlets have the ability to play mini-DV tapes.
If not, the camera itself is a decent deck, with standard video, s-video and
firewire outputs.
Cheapest, highest quality solution I know.
One more thought. Be careful, as many mini-DV cameras do not allow you to
re-record an original from your PC, which is critical. The Sony's, for
example, don't (I think). The Canons do.
