The 25 year old OM1 that I still use had this problem in early days.
Apparently there was a locking compound used on some part of the
contact assembly that became electrically leaky. Olympus UK fixed it
for me - it was a known problem they said. Try switching to FP postion
and firing from the sync socket. If it then works every time, it's the
insulation problem.
I would guess that John H could fix it :-)
