My experience is that while it is true that the flare spot from a filter is
not as sharp as that produced by a lens element, the spot is more of a "blob"
than something that covers the whole surface of the filter. A hood can only
shade the front element from an off axis light source, it can't do anything
about an on-axis light source or bright area.
