Roger, I couldn't agree more about Kodachrome. It's certainly the most
personal and least objective opinion I hold, but the palette of Kodachrome
speaks "travel" to me. Probably the influence of National Geographic and
the like.
I wish Kodachrome matched the resolution of newer films, but sometimes good enough is more than good enough. It's my choice for my petrified wood project because it makes the buildings look "right" and, mostly, because I've used the stuff for so long it's become a familiar friend - if a bit narrow minded. It occurs to me that in specifying Fuji Superia X-tra 800 I omitted several excellent films, but only because they're not commonly available at places like Wal-mart and grocery stores. Fuji NPH, NHG, Kodak Portra, and fast press films from both are all excellent choices. I've shot lots of Superia X-tra simply because it's readily available, cheap in 3- or 4-packs and gives excellent results - lower contrast when shot at 800 or a bit faster, higher color saturation when shot a bit slower. Lex === From: Robinsnes@xxxxxxx Subject: Re: [OM] What lens to carry (again) Date: Thu, 3 Aug 2000 18:59:03 EDT IMHO your advice is excellent and well thought out. My first reaction onreading the beginning was, "Why doesn't he carry ND filters...they are basicequipment, aren't they?" Then I read the next line and you were there. I have found that wide angle lenses are the most useful. I have carried the 75-150 and never used it so often that I could scream. The advantage of wide angle is the ability to create foreground and background differentiation which will make much more dynamic images. The film question is also interesting. Travel is a great deal differentfrom work which confines me to Kodak professional 400 NC or VC. I have a 20x30 hanging in my studio that I shot with a OM1 in awaterproof bag (I was in my Kayak) on 400NC.Wow!! do I have respect for thatfilm. Let me tell you, I am impressed. When I have to shoot negativefilm...that's the stuff. BTW the real E.I. is 250. 400 leaves it a bit thin. The real stuff for travel is Kodachrome 64. Carry a small table top tripod...you can brace it against anything handy and be rock stead at any speed. It also can be used as a chest pod to steady you...lean against a doorway. That's my $.02 Roger Skully robinsnestphotography.com ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com < This message was delivered via the Olympus Mailing List > < For questions, mailto:owner-olympus@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx > < Web Page: http://Zuiko.sls.bc.ca/swright/olympuslist.html > |
