Imagine my consternation when, after using a linear polarizer for years, I
acquired my first SLR with beam-splitter metering cell that required a
circular polarizer.
I scrutinized my old polarizer thoroughly. It certainly *looked* circular.
Not until I lucked upon a Cokin circular polarizer for five bucks in a pawn
shop and compared the two did the coin drop.
Which is why I continually try to encourage newbies by saying that nobody is
born knowing this stuff. And most of us will die knowing less than we'd
hoped to learn.

PS - all my polarisers are round.
