I would guess mainly to avoid dust,fungus and other industrial
grime accumulating and degrading reflection over time. The light actually
travels at the interface between the glass and air ("evanescent" wave) so
anything touching the surface affects throughput. Old binoculars often suffer
bad fungus attacks that degrade throughput.
