Dylan,
couldn't help smiling at your description of
your Bharatpur trip. It does feel good tucking into
some hot curry at the end of a long tiring day, doesn't
it? Not to mention tha samosas to start and the gulab
jamuns to round it off.
If you do go to the area again, I suggest checking
out the Ranthambore National Park, a Tiger Preserve of
some repute. Has one of the highest concentrations of
Royal Bengal Tigers in India. Also a _lot_ of other
wildlife- varieties of deer, birds, magarmachh (type of
crocodile/alligator), leopards, bears and the like.
American list members may recall President Clinton's
recent trip to India, during which he spent a day
touring this park.
I grew up a few miles from there. Wish I had my Oly
gear back then! You could see leopards out on the road
when traveling at night. The nearest railhead is Sawai
Madhopur (around 10 miles from Ranthambore, not far from
Bharatpur by train). You would definitely need to get a
jeep to tour the area. Let me know off-list if you need
more information on the area.
Regards,
Ranjan
