Yup, it's unfortunate that great rock concert photography is a thing of the
past. Lawyers, marketing hype and control-freak performers have pretty much
killed off that type of photography.
My solution is a non-pro looking camera like an XA-series camera. I've seen
good results from a Minox 35mm too. I don't attend big concerts any longer,
but the XA3 has been useful at community theatre and school functions.
Still, there are plenty of venues that don't mind one photographing
performers who haven't yet been signed by major labels and been
indoctrinated into the Madonna-way-of-doing-things. (I hear she won't even
allow family or friends to photograph her.)

This whole conversation seems to me to be moot in view of the fact
that, at least here in the States, there's no way in hell that you
would be allowed to even bring a camera to any kind of traveling
performance with national or even regional scope. I don't think that
even the local community theater allows cameras during performances.
And flash is always verboten. Unless you are shooting your kids at a
school event, I don't see the point of even thinking about this.....
