I've studied the market pretty carefully and from what I've heard so far
there is no comparably priced flatbed/tran adaptor combo that can compare
with even the ES-10 for 35mm scans. Flatbeds like Epson's newish 1200
series apparently do a terrific job with MF negs, but 35mm is really pushing
the limits. And I do already have a flatbed I'm satisfied with for
reflective art.
Most of the dissatisfaction with the ES-10 seems to be about the software.
I can deal with that as long as the hardware and optics are good, which they
reportedly are.

In that case, you might consider a flatbed with a transparency
adaptor. Some of them are pretty cheap, and have the added
versatility of scanning large reflective art, as well as negs and
trannies.
