You're not alone, kiddo. When my second grandson was born I shot everything
with flash at 1/125. Fortunately the blacked out portion interfered with
very little of most shots, so judicious cropping solved that boo-boo.
I guess there is something to be said for P&S simplicity. And lately my mom
is turning out flash pix with her iS-2 that rival my own carefully
constructed bounce/diffused flash pix.

It was bound to happen sooner or later given i rarely use flash...yes, I
blew a roll of portraits and the shutter set to 1/1000.
