Hi Joel,
This subject comes up from time to time and here goes again.
It is indeed a Japanese word.
Boke in photographic/art context:
boke (pronounced bokeh, like 'e' of Pokemon)
boke: [noun] out of focus
boke-ru: [verb, present tense] become out of focus
boke-ta: [verb, past tense, past participle; adjective] became out of focus
boke-mi: [noun] some degree of being out of focus
It is really written "pinto boke" in Romanzed Katakana, to be precise.
I think "pin boke" is a shortend term of "pinto boke", where "pinto"
means point of focus in English. However, I do not know where the
phrase "pinto" came from even I'm Japanese.
Regards,
Jim Terazawa
