That was the theory behind the front placement of the shutter release on the
Miranda Sensorex, which I owned when it first came out. Made sense to me.
When I was healthy enough to participate in long range rifle matches one
trick some of us used was to align the thumb along the top of the stock
rather than wrapping it around the stock. Helped to prevent canting caused
by unconsciously gripping the rifle in a stranglehold. Then the index
finger pulled back into alignment with the thumb. Breath control techniques
are identical for both disciplines too.

Another technique, on tripod or handheld, is to hold the camera between
thumb and finger, so that you squeeze the shutter release between them,
rather than just applying pressure from one side.
