I've had some intermittent problems with nearly drained batteries in my 2n 
before.  The battery check may work even when the batteries are too drained 
to operate the shutter.  it seems the meter reads a little differently with 
drained batteries to, but i can't confirm that with tests.  Try replacing 
them.
