Greetings to all:
Don't we all, at times, secretly relish the opportunity to eavesdrop?
Perhaps it occurs while standing in a slow-moving queue, or during a
commercial flight that's chock-a-block with passengers. The reason I mention
this is that I have been leaning-in in order to read your discussions
regarding all things Olympus.
I've taken much delight in reading and learning of the steady contributors to
this group. Among some of my favorites are Doris Fang, whose wit and
knowledge of photography are readily apparent; Ken Norton, a wonderful
raconteur; John Hermanson, the final authority when it comes to Olympus'
innards. (I'd love to have a Zuiko lens for every time that Mr. Hermanson
has answered OM1 battery queries: e.g., No, your grandmother's hearing-aid
battery won't give accurate meter readings.)
As a way of introduction, I am an exclusive Olympus user. I own a Zoom 130
P-n-S and some digital Oly model I got in Tokyo a couple of years ago. Oh
yes, I'm also a veteran OM1 MD owner and user. The OM1 is my main camera for
pleasure and work; I'm a contributing editor and semi-demi-pro photographer
for a specialty tobacco (largely cigars, pipes, and the like) retailing
magazine. Since tobacco is grown in some 120 countries worldwide, my OM1 has
been my steady, and often only, photographic companion on my journeys. I
even took it when I was lowered, alone, in a small iron bucket more than 100
meters deep in a primitive meerschaum mine beneath the plains of central
Turkey.
As for the quality of the photos I shot, well I'm my own worst critic, which
is as it should be. I've blown many an opportunity to get a great shot. And
I've failed my OM1 oftener than it has failed me. I can't envision parting
with it, for after all, it's family.
My financial compensation for magazine work is laughably meager; my wife
would prefer that I write a series of best-selling novels and become
dizzyingly wealthy. But I am well-off in terms of the satisfaction my OM1
has brought me over these many years.
My advance apologies for the prolixity of this initial posting.
James Lawson
