Here in the UK, the hardware usually comes with some software bundled
in - don't know if it's the same in your part of the world, but it
will be worth checking.

Photoshop is utterly marvellous, but large and complex and can be
daunting. Over here I think the 1270 comes with Photoshop 5.5 LE
bundled in. "5.5" is the version number - 5.x definitely has
advantages over 4, and LE stands for Limited Edition. LE is a cut-down
version of the full product, it may lack a few bells and whistles but
it would certainly give you a very good feel for what the full version
can do. And will also be great for learning on.

I bought a Stylus EX (the first of the "consumer" A3 printers) about
18 months ago, it came with Photoshop 4.0 LE. I paid for the upgrade
to the then current (5.0) Full Monty version, and the combined price
was not very much more than if I had bought the software standalone.
So I kid myself I got the printer for free!

Also look out for cover mounts on various magazines.

The biggest bugbear I've found with the EX is that is is very
difficult to get good black and white prints - the colour casts are
very persistent. I've heard that the 870/1270 are much better in this
respect so I will be interested in any feedback on this.

Good luck
